Training and Resources
The Office of Ethics and Policy is responsible for providing ethical guidance for the University as well as maintaining a Policy Repository of all University Policies, Standards, and Procedures that is comprehensive, equitable and accessible. In an effort to provide the University with all necessary guidance and information, the following resources and Quick Reference Cards (QRCs) are provided for your use. Please feel free to contact the Office of Ethics and Policy with any questions or concerns and subscribe to our monthly ethics and policy newsletter, “The Compass”, for training and news updates.
These materials detail how to access and understand policy at UNC-Chapel Hill.
- Policy Lifecycle
A detailed explanation of the University policy lifecycle is included in the University Policy Framework and University Procedure for Policy Management. The Policy Lifecycle starts with the creation of a new policy and is maintained with comprehensive reviews of existing policies. When a policy no longer serves a necessary purpose or has been incorporated into new policies, a policy may need to be retired. - Policy 101: Understanding University Policies
This training is geared towards anyone looking to review University policies or search the Policy Repository. This training provides a more detailed overview of the policy process as well as key terms you will come across. - Policy 101: How does Policy Work at UNC-Chapel Hill?
These materials detail how to write policies from the ground up and edit them within the policy repository.
- Policy 201: Creating and Editing Policy in the Policy Repository
This training is geared towards University Units or Departments wanting to create new University or Unit policies. This training will show users how to log in, create a new policy document, edit drafts, set up workflows for approval, and submit the policy document for review by the Policy Review Committee. - Policy 202: Writing Good Policy
This training is geared towards University Units or Departments wanting to revise or maintain policies. This training will help users apply the Policy Style Guide and University Equity Audit to their Policy Development process, in order to create clear consistent policy. - Policy on Policies aka the Policy Framework
This document is the University’s Policy on Policies and sets out the requirements for University policy documents as well as strong recommendations for Unit policy documents. - Style Guide
- Executive Summary Cover Sheet for Policy Review Committee (PRC)
This document is used to explain to the PRC the purpose, goals and effect of a new or revised policy on the University. - Request to Retire a University Policy Document
When a policy is no longer relevant (has become outdated) or has been incorporated into another policy (duplicative), the unit that manages that policy must formally request for the Policy to be retired. Because the University community was aware that such a policy exists, the University community must be informed that it will cease to exist. This is done through the PRC meetings. - Creating New Policy Documents

This training is for Policy Review Committee (PRC) liaisons as they help their units maintain accurate and high-quality policy documents.
