The Policy Review Committee met on Friday, May 10, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. for the second annual PRC Celebration.

Thank you to all the PRC members for another year of commitment and contributions!

Policy on Use of External Search Firms

Katie Nolan, Executive Director of Strategy, Policy, and Special Projects for the Division of Human Resources and Equal Opportunity and Compliance, presented the new University Policy on Use of External Search Firms. Search firms will only be used in limited circumstances, so that narrow aspect was pulled from several policies and consolidated into this single new policy. The University’s Policy on Recruitment and Hiring for SHRA Permanent Employment and EHRA Recruitment and Selection Procedures will be slightly modified to reference this new policy.

Policy on Graduate Student Health Insurance Program (GSHIP) and the Procedure for Paying for Graduate Student Health Insurance Program (GSHIP) Insurance Premium

Beverly Wyrick, Graduate School Associate Dean for Finance and Operations, presented this updated Policy on Graduate Student Health Insurance (GSHIP) and updated Procedure for Paying Graduate Student Health Insurance Program (GSHIP) Insurance Premium. The updates include formatting for ease of reading and clarifying language surrounding withdrawals, leaves of absence, special circumstances, graduation, and summer coverage. The policy also addresses when a graduate student only qualifies for GSHIP one semester, but the graduate school wants to provide them with insurance for the entire year. Finally, the policy and procedure titles have been updated to reflect that the Graduate School now administers the policy and procedure instead of the Division of Finance and Operations.

Administrative Updates

Matthew Teal, Associate Director of the Office of Ethics and Policy, and Shoshana Ellis, University Policy Analyst, presented a refresher training on writing good policy:

  • Key items to watch out for,
  • Free tools to help with policy writing, and
  • Possible positive outcomes.

The next PRC meeting will be on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. via Zoom.
